    Can plaquenil cause psoriasis

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Anyone on here with psoriasis ever take plaquenil? I have mild psoriasis and will be starting plaquenil even though it is contraindicated. It can cause a flare up with people with existing psoriasis. My llmd made sure I was well aware of the risk however I am willing to gamble because the benefit may outweigh the potential flare up of psoriasis. Antimalarials Plaquenil, Quinacrine, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine may cause a flare of psoriasis, usually two to three weeks after the drug is taken. Hydroxychloroquine is the least likely to cause side effects. Find information about common, infrequent and rare side effects of Plaquenil Oral.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Unless you are directed to do so by your doctor, do not take Plaquenil, the most commonly prescribed antimalarial. The use of Plaquenil may cause a severe flare of psoriasis. Some antimalarials can cause the skin disease to get worse in some individuals. Talk to your doctor about the available antimalarial treatments and alternatives. If it made your psoriasis worse, did your psoriasis get back to its pre-Plaquenil state after you stopped the Plaquenil? I'm considering Plaquenil for my next drug to try. I have PsA but also have Sjogren's Syndrome, and Plaquenil works well for many with Sjogren's Syndrome. Before using Plaquenil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have psoriasis, porphyria, liver disease, alcoholism, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase G-6-PD deficiency. Take Plaquenil for the full prescribed length of time for malaria. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.
