Why plaquenil should not be cut in half

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Based upon what you both report, it sounds like you should have if you can notice something within days of changing just a portion of the dose. Good luck today. I'd be interested in hearing what he says, since Plaquenil is not known for effecting the heart, etc like you report. Which is mostly why I am taking it also so I have my fingers crossed there. I just started and I am cutting my 200tmg pill in half and only taking the 1/2 for a couple of weeks per my rheumys recommendation as it causes stomach upset at first. I would say try it again but only start with 100mg, not the whole 400, Hi in case you see this - its been two years and I successfully cut my plaquenil and methotrexate in half with no return of symptoms. One week I forgot to take the meth and got a mild return of symptoms - scared the hell out of me but just resuming the same low dose squashed it. Now I'm trying to decide which is my next target.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  7. Hi there, been on plaquenil for many years. Now I have recently gained some weight so my rheumatologist increased my dosage with the new guidelines. She told me to split the pill in half. I did read somewhere I can’t remember where it said not to split the plaquenil. Has anyone done this with results. Am suppose to take 340 mg now.

Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. So cut a pill just before you take it, then take the other half as your next dose. That helps ensure that you compensate for any deviation in size. And split pills in halfnot into smaller. I have been on plaquenil for 8 months and have lost 60 pounds from it this is a good thing also the fatigue is completely gone as is the morning stiffness. Plaq did not do enough to end my flare and get me off pred so doc convinced me to add MTX. She tried to take me off the plaq at my last appointment and I would NOT let her.
