    Weaning off plaquenil

I've been on plaquenil for 6 months for suspected Sjogren's syndrome (I don't have antibodies for Sjorgren's or Lupus but I do have Hashimoto's and have all the symptoms for Sjorgren's so the rheumatologist suggested a trial of plaquenil). Basically I've been on the drug since January and saw the rheumatologist on Wednesday to see how things are going.

It's ok to stop plaquenil without weaning, but I do recommend that if you feel you can wait til Monday, wait, and talk with your rheumy then. I felt that plaquenil wasn't helping, and was causing digestive problems for me, so with my dr. ok, I went off it. After two weeks off, I discovered it had been doing some good on the joint and muscle pain. Does anyone know if you have to be weaned off Plaquenil? I've been on it for 15 years, for Lupus? Methotrexate was added & helps.

I do think it's helped with fatigue and muscle pain but it's hard for me to compare to Xmas as when the improvement is so gradual I think it's really hard to notice on a gradual basis. I *think* I'm improving but it's been a gradual process and I said to him that it's quite hard to tell how much of an improvement I'm feeling.

So that's the update. The lesson here is - for those who need to go off plaquenil, be careful about just going off it cold turkey. Obviously some of CAN do that, but if you don't know if you're one of them - better to be on the safe side and wean slowly. Take it from me! I am feeling much better after bumping my dose back up over the last few. Happily, going off plaquenil quelled the worst of my psoriasis, so the overall trade-off was eventually worth it for me. It wasn't very clear from your post whether it was the primary care doctor or the rheumatologist who wants him to decrease the plaquenil. Years ago I took Plaquenil - It worked great at first then My Hair started falling out like a chemo victim after taking for 5 months. Ironic because I've been taking Enbrel for 4 months now and experiencing problems of flu like symptoms for 2-3 days after every shot.
