Can sulfasalazine and plaquenil be taken together

While these reviews might be helpful, they are not a substitute for the expertise, skill, knowledge and judgement of healthcare practitioners. Drug interactions are reported among people who take Hydroxychloroquine sulfate and Sulfasalazine together.

In February, still no improvement, he added sulfasalazine – March, still in pain, went to a new rheumatologist & he added Plaquenil. All of my numbers were very, very high. I’m still in lots of pain, and some days can hardly move my hands. Moreover, sulfasalazine passes into breast milk and the effects of sulfasalazine on a nursing infant are not known. Do not take sulfasalazine without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. The safety and effectiveness of sulfasalazine have not been established for children younger than 2 years of age. My recommendation is not to even be on the drug. It is helpful but don't think you can't get plaquenil toxicity. You can. And it's bad. And I had an ophthalmologist tell me for 15 years that my symptoms had nothing to do with plaquenil and to stay on it because he never did a real plaqueninl examination on me.

Sulphasalasine was helpful in my case but took 12 weeks to kick in. After a while it wasn't as effective and I too was prescribed methotrexate alongside. The side effects of the methotrexate for me were horrendous chronic chest infections and I'm now asthmatic as a result. I refuse to take it now even if its my passport to biologic treatment. I started taking sulfasalazine SZS with Plaquenil 2 months ago for RA. Immediately felt dizzy, confused, nosebleed and depression and also severe vision changes. Bi-Weekly blood draws were a total painful waste of time. Then began a very intense ringing in my ears. Discontinued Plaquenil twice a day, and dropped the SZS from 4 per day to 3. How Should Plaquenil Be Taken? To suppress malaria the adult dose of Azulfidine is 500 mg = 300 mg base taken on exactly the same day of each week. Pediatric dose is based on the child's weight.
