    Methylene blue falciparum chloroquine

Chloroquine has been extensively used in mass drug administrations, which may have contributed to the emergence and spread of resistance. It is recommended to check if chloroquine is still effective in the region prior to using it.

Based on the combination of chloroquine and methylene blue BlueCQ as a possible antimalarial medication was recently conducted in Burkina Faso. The results have not been analyzed yet, but here we can answer a most fre-quently asked question – Yes, the urine was indeed blue, and methylene blue is excreted, without being meta- Methylene blue, also known as methylthioninium chloride, is a medication and dye. As a medication, it is mainly used to treat methemoglobinemia. Specifically, it is used to treat methemoglobin levels that are greater than 30% or in which there are symptoms despite oxygen therapy. It has previously been used for cyanide poisoning and urinary tract infections, but this use is no longer recommended.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

As an antiparasitic agent, methylene blue is pleiotropic it interferes with hemoglobin and heme metabolism in digestive organelles, and it is a selective inhibitor of Plasmodium falciparum glutathione reductase. The latter effect results in glutathione depletion which sensitizes the parasite for chloroquine action. The combination of chloroquine and methylene blue is potentially effective for the treatment of chloroquine-resistant malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The aim of this study was to investigate whether methylene blue influences the pharmacokinetics of chloroquine. After one migraine lasted 4 1/2 months, yup that long, and a LOT or work with neurologist who is a guru in migraines, I ran out of my plaquenil. I didn't get to the pharmacy to pick up the refill, and had no migraines. Took 1 tablet, migraine back. So, not worth it for me.
