I have lupus, and I had my daughter in Feb. 05. I have never taken plaquenil as I have a seizure disorder as well, however, I do know that my Rheumy told me that the only safe drug to take during pregnancy is prednisone. Plaquenil ® hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a prescription anti-malarial medication that is also used to treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. In many cases, the benefits of using Plaquenil for malaria prevention or treatment in pregnant women outweigh the risks.

Generally, Plaquenil® can be continued to help prevent a lupus flare. It is rare that Plaquenil causes fetal problems, and the risk of a flare outweighs the fetal risk. Prednisone also should be continued. If you are on mycophenolate mofetil or mycophenolic acid, talk to your doctor about switching to azathioprine. Plaquenil is sold in 200mg tablets. The recommended adult dosage for a person with lupus is 200 to 400 mg daily. It can be taken in two doses or at one time. Doses above 400 mg/day are not recommended. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. Side effects, drug interactions, pregnancy safety information, and dosage information should be reviewed prior to taking this medication.
